Volunteer Jobs Needed
Find out about jobs you can do as a volunteer

Get involved!!

It takes a lot of people power to keep things running at the farm. We need volunteers to do all the physical labor needed to keep the Rescue running smoothly and the animals well cared for. Volunteers can help with the physical needs of the horses including grooming, feeding and providing TLC or they can assist with barn chores such as cleaning stalls. We also need help with upkeep such as fence mending, painting and organization.

If you have other skills that could support the Rescue consider assisting with the newsletter, planning and working at special events and fundraisers, writing articles and helping to secure sponsorships.

Our volunteer program is designed to bring people that have a deep love and respect for horses together with horses that need love and respect. Through a series on hands-on experiences, including diet, grooming, handling, medical and dental care, round pen training and riding, our hope is that volunteers will acquire the knowledge to interact with horses in a positive manner. By learning and demonstrating levels of responsibility and knowledge, our volunteers will advance to the point of teaching others.

You'll find that we are very specific about horse care. During the hot, muggy days of summer and on the miserable, bitter cold days of winter, the horses still need to be fed, the water buckets filled, the paddocks cleaned and the medications given. If you say you'll be here, we're counting on you. On the other hand, if you just want to groom you are more than welcome to come when the weather's nice. We have a number of people that use their "grooming time" to get away from it all. Once we know that you can handle yourself safely around horses, we'll leave you alone.

I don't have much time, how can I help?
You can do a lot to help! Click on the Donate button and send a donation. Taking care of so many horses requires a LOT of money for feed, hay and medication. Your monthly contribution can go a long way toward covering the cost of caring for a horse or providing medications.

You can also make a donation of equipment and tack. Contact us to make a donation of these items that are in good repair. We will pick them up or you can come out and visit us and bring them.

Volunteer Orientation - 2nd Saturday of Each Month

For new volunteers, you will need to take a volunteer orientation course to be able to volunteer. Volunteer Orientations will take place the 2nd Saturday of each month at Northwind. Please see the Calendar for the date of the next volunteer orientation. You need not to pre-register, just show up and be ready to learn and work.

Young people under the age of 18 must attend the volunteer orientation with a parent or legal guardian so that they may understand the rules and benefits of volunteering before they start. Horse experience is not required. You must be 15 years old or older to volunteer, unless accompanied by a parent. Parents of children under the age of 15 must work along side their child and supervise them. Children under the age of 15 may not be left at the facility without a parent or guardian unless by explicit agreement with the facility manager.

Please complete and print out the Volunteer Form and Liability Release to bring with you (forms are in pdf format).

Some of these things will be covered in the volunteer orientation and participants will be invited to stay after the orientation and learn more.

  • Tour of HRRRF
  • History of HRRRF
  • Farm Rules
  • Safety
  • Body language of horses
  • Handling of horses
  • Grooming of horses including cleaning of wash racks, shared equipment and supplies
  • Location and use of barn/stall cleaning equipment
  • And other items that need to be done at the barn

This is a great opportunity to learn, volunteer and get to know the horses we have at the rescue. If you ever thought about volunteering, this is the time. If you miss this volunteer orientation, remember there will be one each month on the second Saturday of the month.

Step Up and Volunteer Today - we could use your help!
