"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan. The life of a horse, often half our own, seems endless until one day. That day has come and gone for me, and I am once again within a somewhat smaller circle."

-Irving Townsend "The Once Again Prince"

Dudley left a mark on my heart....and all I can do is smile when I think of him
~ Liz Nicholas

A couple of years ago, my girlfriends and I started donating a little money on each of our birthdays instead of exchanging gifts. The money has become known as the "Birthday Babes Donation Fund". This year, we would like to donate to SavetheHorse.org in memory of four great horses who all moved on to greener pastures this past year. Their names are Savannah, T-Bird, Peaches & Aerial. May they run swift and strong forever.

Best Regards, Jennie Hollis (of Alpharetta, GA) for "The Birthday Babes"

Hot Shot (07/02/09)
For the past 22 years, this wonderful gelding was my loving companion, partner
and friend. For him to leave me so suddenly from colic the night of April 28, 2009, still seems unreal.
I still hear his whinny as he would greet me when I approached his stall, still see him lift his head and
start walking up the hill in the pasture when I called him, still feel the strong muscles in his neck
as I ran my hand under his thick black mane. I don’t know when the pain of this loss will subside,
but the joyous journey with my dear Hot Shot has made every tear I now shed all worthwhile. I miss my
friend more than words can express and I am so thankful for the great time, wonderful rides and eternal memories we made together.
Laura Buck, Marietta, GA

04/29/09 Judith Marion Martins of Jackson Township, NJ
My Mom, Judy, was a mother, grandmother, daughter, aunt and sister loved by all who knew her. She was a great lover of all animals - especially horses. She owned her first horse was she was 37 years old and this was the best time in her life. She moved to a small farm in 1988 and cared and loved all of her animals: Chickens, Ducks, Horses, Rabbits, Cats, Dogs, Ferrets, Goats, Birds and Fish. She took in any animal that needed love and care. She nursed many, many animals back to life. The local game warden in Jackson Township, New Jersey would bring hurt wild animals to my Mom to see if she could give them a chance (more times than not she was successful).

We found your organization on-line and knew immediately my Mom would like to be apart of what you do for young fillies and colts. We have asked that donations in her honor are made to the Horse, Rescue, Relief and Retirement Fund, Inc. Please use these funds to help as many horses as you can. ~ Tracey Cadorette of Merchantville, NJ

Baskin
Baskin was my baby boy, my first love. Even though he was 33 he still had a lot of spunk in him. I loved him so dearly. He was the best of the best of the best and he will never be forgotten. When I first got him and did my first gallop, I lost both my stirrups and he went from a full out gallop to a halt in 5 strides. I caught my balance and my stirrups and then he took off again. He loved us with all his heart and we did the same for him in return. When we found out that he had cancer and anemia we were devastated, and started putting all this medicine on it and really watching him. He was never the same after we got home from UGA. My baby boy was so good to us that we didn't want him to suffer and hard decisions to make in the near future. I rode him for 4 years and he made me so confident in my riding and trusting horses that I no have no problem riding any horse that you tell me to. If I had one wish it would be to bring him back at a young age and have him all over again and never let it end. We thank the rescue everyday for giving him to us and will never ever forget him or the rescue. If you have a chance to adopt a horse grab it and run with it because you never know what you will get out of it. Our special surprise was the best thing that we could have ever done and wish it would not have ended so fast but life comes in short and great packages and all have GREAT meanings to them. Take a chance at something new. We did and it was AMAZING!! Baskin we will always remember you and have a picture of you everywhere.
~ Brigitte Aickelin

Royal Beat "Yoshi" (April 17, 1993 - April 1, 2009)
Loved by his guardian Melissa and Dan Phillips, Rome, GA

Yoshi and I began our journey together 8 years ago at HRRRF and I am so thankful for them bringing us together.
I've loved many of the horses that have gone through their barn doors but none as much as Yoshi.

From a poem a friend sent me. Author, Anonymous
"If it is in your blood to love horses, you share your life with them. Our horses know our secrets; we braid our tears into their manes and whisper our hopes into their ears. A barn is a sanctuary in an unsettled world, a sheltered place where life's true priorities are clear: a warm place to sleep, someone who loves us, and the luxury of regular meals. Some of us need these reminders. When you step back, it's not just about horses - it's about love, life, and learning. On any given day, a friend is celebrating the birth of a foal, a blue ribbon, or recovery from an illness. That same day, there is also loss: a broken limb, a case of colic, a decision to sustain a life or end it gently. As horse people, we share the accelerated life cycle of horses: the hurried rush of life, love, loss, and death that caring for these animals brings us. When our partners pass, it is more than a moment of sorrow. We mark our loss with words of gratitude for the ways our lives have been blessed. Our memories are of joy, awe, and wonder. Absolute union. We honor our horses for their brave hearts, courage, and willingness to give. To those outside our circle, it must seem strange. To see us in our muddy boots, who would guess such poetry lives in our hearts? We celebrate our companions with praise worthy of heroes. Indeed, horses have the hearts of warriors and often carry us into and out of fields of battle. Those who know them understand how fully a horse can hold a human heart. Together, we share the pain of sudden loss and the lingering taste of long-term illness. We shoulder the burden of deciding when or whether to end the life of a true companion. In the end, we're not certain if God entrusts us to our horses--or our horses to us. Does it matter? We're grateful God loaned us the horse in the first place."

In October 2008, Ranger was adopted to a wonderful family. He was two years old. He had congestive heart failure, but Ranger’s adoptive family loved him so much they decided to keep him. They lost Ranger last weekend to this disease. Ranger was the luckiest dog to have such a wonderful family to love him so dearly. If all pets could be this lucky.

Donation Made in Memory of "Fasha"
(08/2008) Fasha was my dad's 30-year-old Arabian mare and amazing riding companion. She and my father had an amazing bond that took them over hundreds of endurance trail miles over the east coast.

I am grateful that I have my parents in my life who have shown me how important animals are in our lives and the bond we have with them.

Fasha is running in green pastures at the rainbow bridge with all of our horse buddies especially Zar and Magic - the trio.

In Memory of Scoobie and Henry

Both Scoobie and Henry passed away this year they were a big part of the Flesher family and will be missed greatly. Their mom Dina Flesher has one of biggest hearts I know. She is also one of your volunteers along with her daughter Hannah. Hannah is following right along in her mother's footsteps. I am so happy that Dina has become an asset to our family.

With love in honor of Scoobie and Henry,
Melanie

Casper
Adopted from SavetheHorses.org
Passed over the rainbow bridge on 9-6-2006.

I thought you might like this beautiful picture I found going thru our files. Ironically this picture was dated 09-06-1999. He passed away 09-06-06. He meant the world to us. He taught me patience and understanding of the horse language. And he taught both Ash and I unconditional love. These are gifts that live on forever.

Deb

Baron
Passed over the rainbow bridge.

Baron was my best friend. I loved him very much. I thank God for all the years we had together. He will live forever in my heart. Now I just have to figure out what I am supposed to do without him....after 25 years you just get used to him being there. Bonnie

Bonnie donated to the HRRRFI in honor of Baron. Her friends also donated in honor of Baron. She has good friends who understand her loss. It makes our hearts heavy to lose our beloved horse. They are so much more than a horse to us. They are a friend, a companion. They are where we can tell all our hopes and dreams, our disappointments and our fears. Horses have a special intuition to understand how we feel. We love them so much for that. They keep us rooted in the earth. Now Baron is running in the heavens. Rest in Peace, Baron.

Sugar
Passed over the rainbow bridge.

Horse, thou art truly a creature without equal, for thou fliest without wings and conquerest without sword.

The Koran

Sugar’s Eyes

Sugar was sold at an auction for a meat price because she could no longer be ridden, have babies, or be used in some way for the benefit of humans. She was very frightened, swayback and underweight. I will never forget her eyes, they were so cold and hard with no life in them. When we led her out of the auction, everyone laughed at her and wanted to know what we were going to do "with that old horse". We informed them that we were going to "take her home and give her lots of love".
