Happy Trails - news and photos of horses adopted!

 | Maud's Big Adventure
Maude is a Percheron mare, a big Percheron mare. She was available for adoption and at the same time, Dream Power,
a non-profit Therapeutic Riding Center for disabled children, was retiring their best therapeutic draft horse. We
agreed to let Dream Power take Maude on a trail basis to see if she can fill the big 'horseshoes' of their retiring
draft horse. Maude is very sweet, very willing and very big. She loaded in the trailer easily, especially since we
opened the window to make it look more inviting. The innocent pictures don't tell the big story. Maude put her big
head out the window and had no idea of how to get her big head back in. It took about 40 minutes and many different
inventive techniques to get her big head back in the trailer so she could be transported to Dream Power's farm a few
miles away. We finally had a few lead ropes attached to her halter, but a big towel over her head to blindfold her and
pushed, shoved and pulled her big head back into the trailer and shut that door. What a big adventure! Horses never
cease to amaze me how they constantly make us think, 'out of the box'
Thank you, Tom Doran, for taking the pictures. Great job. |

Mrs. Flanagan,
As I understand it from talking to Jodi Hannah, you were largely responsible for the load of hay that
will be arriving later this week for Vermilion Parish cattlemen hit hard by Hurricane Rita. We have survived the
immediate effects of Rita because of donations just like this. How can we thank you? So many of our cattlemen
lost homes, vehicles, fences, winter hay supplies, and most of their personal belongings. The donations of feed
and hay have made it possible for many of our cattlemen to have hope that they can rebuild, and salvage what
they have been able to gather after the storm. I have included a few pictures that show loose cattle on the road;
plant refuse on top of sheds; and one of thousands of houses damaged.
Again, I thank you, on behalf of the Vermilion Parish cattle industry.

Gidget is a miniature horse with dwarfism genes. She is affectionately
know as "the wiener horse" because of her deformities. She is built like a hot dog! She is a permanent
resident at the rescue farm. The legs all paddle like a fan when she walks. |
|
 | |
Many people started breeding mini horses without the knowledge of conformation and
problems. Dickie and Doc are two more mini's with dwarfism bred into them. They are
precious but require medical care to keep them healthy. Many dwarfs never reach their first birthday.
Dickie is 2 years old and Doc is 9. They are called the 'Oompha Loompha Brothers', because they resemble
the famous "Oompha Loompha's" from Willie Wonka. They are permanent residents. |
You can sponsor the mini dwarfs and make a difference in their lives. Dickie needs leg surgery and
special shoes and needs his piggy bank filled. Can you help? Your 'change' can make a difference. |
Rescue Me by Dana Michalski of Chili, Wi.
The sparkle of life has long since left my tired eyes
Years of neglect have brought me here
A steel hand is all that I have felt
The bang of an auction gavel sealed my fate
The huge steel truck stands before me.
But a golden ray of sunshine comes upon me
A soft voice whispers in my drooping ears
A gentle hand touches my tired withers
Although I flinch, I do not feel the sting of a whip.
Calming words and a soothing voice ease my fears
A halter and lead rope are gently placed on me
Another trailer stands before me now, I am urged to go inside
I struggle with fear and pull back hard on the rope
Awaiting harsh words and whip lashes, I pull harder.
But no harsh words hurt my ears
No sting from the whip piercing my skin
I only hear more gentle soothing words
With fear and trepidation, I step into the trailer
My entire body quivers in fear
A huge mound of fresh green hay awaits me.
At my destination, I am gently led into an enormous stall with deep, soft bedding
A trough of clear, cool water to drink from
A feed tub with fresh grain awaits me
I peek out my stall door to a pasture of lush green grass
I wonder quietly outloud, "Is this the Rainbow Bridge?"
The horse in the stall next to me nickers,
"No, it's an equine rescue."

Please visit AHDF.org to learn more about Senate and House of Representative bills to stop horse slaughter!
Please ask your representatives to support:
S. 576 - to restore the prohibition on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild free-roaming horses and burros
H.R. 297 - This Bill reverses the amendment to the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse & Burro Act stealthily
introduced by Senator Conrad Burns as a rider to the 2005 Appropriations Bill. If allowed to stand, the
Burns provision will lead to the slaughter of thousands of wild horses for human consumption abroad.
H.R. 503 - To amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering,
receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human
consumption, and for other purposes.

I was emailed a question recently that I was happy to answer and would like everyone to
know what happens at the rescue farm.
The question was: "What is a no-kill shelter?"
